Me and the Pope-y

Now for some reason, I never liked the last Pope (I’m not catholic, so my opinion really holds no water). JP just really rubbed me wrong [and no that's not some subversive catholic innuendo]. Probaly not his fault, I just remember having these neighbors when I was growing up who were catholic. Their whole house was John Paul - not Jesus - but just the Popey. I always found it weird.
But new Pope, well so far I don’t mind the guy. Sure, he looks like the emperor from the Star Wars movies, but you just have to get past that.
Okay my point is in here somewhere… I was reading an article about the Christmas and the Vatican. Popey had some pretty sharp observations that really got me thinking.
“Is a ‘Savior’ still needed by a humanity which has reached the moon and Mars and is prepared to conquer the universe; for a humanity which knows no limits in its pursuit of nature’s secrets and which has succeeded even in deciphering the marvelous codes of the human genome?”
So the question remains: are we a people who have fooled ourselves into believing that we don’t need a Savior?
When I look over the world I live in, my answer to this question is “Yes.”
What do you think?

hey stuart…
your on to something here….in every little thing we face in our day to day there is something that is trying to get our focus off of our need for a savior…sometimes it is subtle and other times overt…
Stuart I like the main point you make here. We do need a saviour…constantly and often in ways we dont understand or expect. I like the Catholics emphasis on Jesus. I find that many homes of protestant Christians may not have the icons of the pope etc but are worse in a more subtle way….they have not only repalced Jesus with a consumer lifestyle they claim he condones it! The saviour we, and definitly I, need is often missing.
Hey! Your big up for Pope-y made me chuckle… Some interesting points raised by Benny XVI

Great quote. I am surprised, however, by you take on our last pope. While I greatly respect our new pope, his stance and theology signal (IMHO) a significant move in the wrong direction in many ways. JP was far from perfect, but he was remarkable humble and movingly generous in his faith and politics. To each his own!
Peace,
Jamie
I think you have a very good point, and I think “angry and shallow” fleshes it out more for protestants.
I once went into an Evangelical Bookstore here in Tulsa. I saw 13 pictures of Pres. Bush. 5 each of angels and Saddam Hussein, and 3 of Jesus.
At least He made it in there somewhere.
I think most of our society does believe we don’t need a Savior. Most people, subconsciously even, think they’re OK on their own.
