Okay here’s the assignment. Read the quote, watch the video. Give your impressions. I really want to see a dialogue started here. Agree or disagree, let’s talk.

Quote of the week:

 ”Times change. God doesn’t, but times do. We learn and grow, and the world around us shifts, and the Christian faith is alive only when it is listening, morphing, innovating, letting go of whatever has gotten in the way of Jesus and embracing whatever will help us be more and more the people God wants us to be.”

Rob Bell - Velvet Elvis

Video of the week:

Solomon’s Porch. Check this video out, it’s really interesting. Solomon’s Porch one of the more well known emerging churches.” Interesting ideas here, both good and bad. {saw this video thanks to Virgil}

My input: I agree with Bell on many levels, but there’s a danger/fear in changing. What will happen? What will things look like? Will I still feel comfortable with the new changes? And after watching the video, I embrace some of this sense of freedom, but feel real uncomfortable with the “whatever goes” feeling as well. I’m quite torn.

We are creatures of habit. We hate change. Some change we should hate, others are good for us.

  1. I love this new wordpress theme. I have it on my blog now as well.

    About your topic. I agree with what you are saying and also Rob. I’m envolved in youth ministry at my church. I’m on youth leadership. It’s my responsabilty to make decisions. We have been goign to this same summer camp so long..this year its all booked. I don’t want to change camps, but I know that God will show up at both. I’m glad you posted this. I got alot from it.

  2. Stuart, I found the video really interesting. I like much of what Solomon’s porch is doing because they clearly speak to people of faith who want to be more than passive observers of worship. As to Bell’s notion that God doesn’t change, I’m not sure that any of us are in a position to state that emphatically. Often people will comment on the different characterizations of God in scripture and one reasonable answer is that humankind’s understanding of God changed over time — but God is constant. However, process theology would say that both change. As is any true relationship built on love, both parties are involved in give and take and sharing of responsiblity and “power.” Process theology would argue that just as God influences us, we influence God. So, in a sense, it is possible for God to change. Any thoughts on that?
