This week, Ventus was labeled “emergent” by some local pastors like it was a dirty word. I was a bit offended to be so easily labeled. It was very judgmental and off base.

On a side note, I got the new Rob Bell and Brian McLaren books in the mail today. I’m way jazzed.

Christian groups have slammed the remake of cult 1974 movie Black Christmas, because they find the horror movie “offensive.” The Glen Morgan-directed film stars Oliver Hudson, Katie Cassidy, Lacey Chabert and Michelle Trachtenberg and centers on a group of US college students who battle a slasher over the Christmas holidays. The movie will be released on Christmas Day in US cinemas, much to the horror of Christian groups. Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, says, “To have a movie that emphasizes murder and mayhem at Christmas, a time of celebration and joy around the world seems to be ill founded.”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Does Jesus even give a rip about this? I’d say a big fat “NO”. Whether or not we forget him due to shopping/over spending or by going to a horror movie - we’ve still forgotten him. Thanks anyways, Staver!

Christianity has been boiled down to traditions and warm fuzzy feelings. That’s it? The holiday spirit? Any spirit that flows around the holidays was probaly kicked out of heaven eons ago (yes, this is my bah humbug speech).

Now I’m not pro horror movie and I’m not anti traditions. But let’s be realistic, folks that get religious twice a year are really doing nothing at all.

Are we called to a season or a lifestyle of dying daily for Christ? We can have fun on Christmas, but let’s be careful not to act overly religous about it. It’s a consumerstic holiday filled with traditions. Plain and simple.

So let’s not argue that people are desecrating Jesus by showing a horror movie on Christmas. We desecrate Jesus by forgetting him every other day of the years - that’s the real horror.
