This morning at breakfast we got into an interesting conversation with the kids. It revolved around the real reasons we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then it led to us discussing the difference between “wants” and “needs.” Here is the list we came up with (the bikini on the “want” list was Aida’s).

It’s been really good to walk this journey with the kids. Consumerism is a hard thing to walk away from and TV indoctrinates the kids so early. We all discussed the difference between selfish and selfless. They’re young but they’re starting to get it.

So we’re going for a bare bones Christmas season (well, we’ve been moving that way for years).

This was a good start to the day and a good start to the holiday season.

Today, Samuel (my 3 yr. old) was pretending to drink out of an empty glass. He was fake gulping loudly, so I asked him what he was pretending to drink. He responded, “I’m not pretending, Dad. I just like to drink air.”

What more can you say…

Day 10 of my Road trip. I’m getting road fatigue. I can’t wait to get home and see my wife and kids. One more day. I can’t imagine how big my little princess is. This is one pic of home that keeps me going.

Well, I figured it was about time to introduce my kids to The Goonies. It was a staple movie of mine growing up and James, Aida, and Samuel needed to partake on this 80’s delectable goodness. It’s a classic 80’s kid adventure flick.

My favorite moment was watching it at a midnight showing in a theater on my college (University of Georgia) campus. It was amazing.  Crowd packed beyond capacity, quoting nearly every line. It was the first time Miriam saw it and it was a frenzy. It was memorable.

Our family movie night experience was great. The kid’s verdict… James and Samuel gave it two thumbs up. James wants to go treasure hunting and Samuel wants his own lovable, monster, man creature Sloth (”That man is funnnneeeee”). Aida didn’t like it because the girls in the movie were dumb.

Ah, you win some, you lose some.

Any childhood favorites you’ve subjected your kids [or youth group] to?

I woke up this morning and walked down the hall in a sleepy stupor when I saw some peculiar warning signs. I found this (and others like it) placed on the floor and leading up a pile of dog barf (not pictured) on the carpet. James (6yr old) woke up saw the mess and posted signs around so we wouldn’t step on it. I don’t want to think of what would have happened had he not placed the warning signs.

Ha ha. I love my kids. I only wish James could run around ahead of me, putting warning signs in all areas of my life.
