lhwwjd lrg Thought/Quote of the Week

As I’ve said before, I’m not fan of politics. There’s no one running on either side that I particularly like. And you’ll never see this blog endorse anyone. It just won’t happen. That being said, a friend of mine sent me an article about Mike Huckabee, a Republican running for President. He’s a former Southern Baptist pastor and has a unique perspective of seeing both sides of government and church. I love this quote from him. I think in this instance, he’s spot on. There’s so much truth to this statement.

“Government knows it does not have the answer, but it’s arrogant and acts as though it does. Church does have the answer but will cowardly deny that it does and wonder when the world will be changed.”

My loathing for politics comes from this idea: why change the world through political force, when it can be done with prayer and following the Lord. I just see two diverging paths. One is consumed with gaining power (politics) and the other is all about giving it up (following Jesus). Policy will not change hearts. It will only make rules and enforce them. Yet we still try to make this happy marriage of Jesus and politics. If Jesus is going to save America is through the brokenness and humility of the churches seeking the Lord and reaching out in compassion to the hurt, broken and poor. The whole point of Huckabee’s quote is that we as believers can change things, but won’t. So we turn to politics to vote someone to do it.

So what do you think? Am I wrong? How can both Jesus and politics coincide?

Although I see the tension you are trying to portray, I must say that the issue involves very many details. One such detail can be seen in the nature of the political activity as seeking some sort of public immortalization in THIS world, rather than solely in a world beyond this one. On the contrary, the believer seeks the immortalization of the afterlife. Finding a common ground between these two aspirations is quite difficult, I concur. But perhaps works like Thomas More’s “Utopia” can aid us in understanding the dilemma.

great points! i love your blog. i appreciated the honesty. The Church. The loved one of Christ. The Bride. We have more power to give up than we ever could realize. Power is giving up power, you could say (to confuse me)… haha. I think you are right. I would love people who believe what you wrote to get involved with politics and help people see the rescue of Christ… that really is what it’s all about … ? I would really hate to see the entire human power structure of the world continue to get more and more God-less… which is the trend of course. Rescue is the key. how can the most people see the rescue of Christ? Thanks.

I am not called to change the world through political means. I care and I’ll vote but I’ll not chase down votes for a guy. I’m just not going to put that much energy into it. I am going to do my best to make measurable change in the world around me and share the best way to live with all who will listen.
Now, I’m off to bed.
Peace

I have enclosed a link from Chuck Missler entitled Thanksgiving: America’s Challenge. It will take you to the founding of America and details the beliefs and importance of their Christian faith. It is not the Christopher Columbus and Squanto story that is in our history books, which should be no surprise to anyone. I must say that I agree with what Stuart is saying because of what we now see as the disconnect between our faith and our government; but I assure you it did not start that way in this country nor was it intended to ever change. You see the men who founded this country were believers and practiced their faith in their government without apology and realized its necessity. When you go so long and so far from these truths, as this country has, it begins to feel normal, God forbid it. (John Eldredge’s: Waking the Dead; the see lion in the desert scenario) I hope you will take some time to review some of the free downloads and post your thoughts. I totally agree that each of us as believers have the responsibility and the call to go out into this world and relieve some of its pain, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a leader or two who was on the same page as you.
